About the Forum

The forum ‘Future 2.0: Investments in Literacy for Democracy, Sustainable Development, and Human Capital’ aims to highlight the connection between declining reading skills and societal challenges such as low-quality education, a high percentage of young people who neither work nor study, a low-skilled workforce, and a diminished understanding of how individual actions impact the environment. This decline not only hampers people’s ability to reach their full potential but also fuels misinformation, weakens critical thinking, and facilitates the spread of populist messages, all of which undermine democratic values.

This one-day forum will feature international speakers from organisations such as the World Bank, IEA, and OECD, who will highlight how declining literacy affects fields like workforce development, democracy, and sustainable growth. The event will also focus on Bulgaria’s challenges, addressing key issues related to democracy, sustainable development, and human capital. Additionally, the correlation between deteriorating environmental quality and literacy levels will be explored, underscoring the broader societal impact of literacy.

Speakers from Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the European network for literacy and reading promotion, EURead, will share insights on the return on investments in literacy from various perspectives.

The final panel, Future 2.0, is dedicated to discussing the next steps in developing a comprehensive national reading plan, aimed at solving literacy challenges and, in turn, addressing issues across other areas of life. The panelists will include representatives from various organizations, companies, and institutions in Bulgaria.

The event may interest company managers, CEOs of governmental and non-governmental organizations, PR and HR specialists, political and economic analysts, IT professionals, as well as experts in trade, innovation, education, and culture.

Participation in this forum is free. Registration is mandatory.
